We join our story, already in progress …

Posted August 9th, 2010 in The Journey by Adam

I’ve decided to restart my blog, and chronicle my efforts to start a career as a graphic designer in film and television. It’s a journey I’m already on, but in the grand scheme of things, I’m still at the start of that journey. As I go, I’ll be talking about what I’m doing to make connections in the industry, what projects I’m working on (assuming I can talk about them yet), frustrations, advice I’ve gotten from others, and anything else that occurs to me that might be relevant to my adventure. Adventure is a perfect word for this. I’m jumping on this career path a little later than others (I’m 35 now), and to be quite honest, I have no idea where this path will wind up leading me in the end. But I’ve never been more certain of what I want to do when I grow up. In some ways, this will be a diary for me, to focus my thoughts and help me track my progress along the way. At the same time, I hope to make it a useful reference for others looking to embark on the same journey.

Who am I?

If you’re reading this blog for the first time, here’s a little info about me. My name is Adam Levermore, and I’m a freelance graphic designer and the Design Director for Quantum Mechanix (QMx).

I began my journey as a fan artist, creating designs inspired by Joss Whedon’s Firefly. My professional career as a graphic designer got off the ground when I hooked up with the good folks at QMx, who offered me a chance to get paid for doing the things I was already doing for the love of it. Through QMx, I’ve had the chance to work on licensed products for Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Serenity, Firefly, Stargate and more. I’m now also doing freelance design work, unrelated to my work with QMx.

I specialize in a found-art style of design with a heavy emphasis on authenticity. I like to design things that feel well worn, so I spend a lot of time researching fonts, design styles and printing methods to make sure my designs have a realistic, lived-in feel.

Currently, my graphic design work falls under the heading of “moonlighting.” I have a day job working for a local city government in the San Francisco Bay Area. My work with QMx, and the outstanding reception it has received, is what inspired me to take this leap of faith and pursue graphic design as a full-time career.

Living  in the Bay Area, I know I will eventually have to move to L.A. to pursue this dream of designing for film and television in earnest. But for now, I am laying the groundwork, making connections and expanding my portfolio so that when the time comes, I will be able to hit the ground running.

Thanks for following me on this journey. I hope it proves to be inspirational, or at the very least, not boring! Please feel free to leave comments and follow me on twitter: @lexigeek.
