Official Super 8 iPhone App

Official Super 8 iPhone App

Yesterday, a project I’ve been keeping under wraps for months was finally revealed. It’s a Super 8 camera iPhone app, which is a tie-in to the J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg Super 8 movie, coming out this summer. I worked on the project for QMx, coming up with the concept for the app and designing the core user interface. I then handed it off to my friend and colleague Mohammed “Hawk” Haque, who took my initial designs, polished them up, and got the app ready for primetime.

One of things I’m most proud of is the photorealistic lens I designed from scratch. As soon as I get a chance, I’ll put together a detailed tutorial on this, but in the meantime, here’s an animation of the steps I used to create it.

I couldn’t be more thrilled at how the app turned out, and it’s getting rave reviews from people, many of whom are mentioning how much they love the design, which makes me so happy!

When/how does it decide to insert snippets (I assume from the movie)?

I’m not sure what the algorithm is, actually. That’s all magic to me!

It is cute, and I know it is a promotional vehicle, but it would be lovely if in an update, that could be turned off. Then it would be an even awesome parting gift, too.

Actually, you can. If you go into the iPhone settings, and scroll down to the app-specific settings, you’ll find settings for the Super 8 app, where you can toggle the inserted frames feature on and off.

You, sir, deserve a medal for making what is essentially the most useful and all around best promotional movie app on the planet. And a solid app on top of it. Great design by the way.

Thanks! I can’t take full credit for it, since it was definitely a team effort, but it’s been really gratifying to see how much people are enjoying it!

This is great. I love grain and film effects!!
I’m wondering though, this looks pretty similar to the 8mm app. How is this different? Did you use sort of the same image treatment engine?

    And you mentioned a tutorial… :)

Just found your work out. LOVE it. really really great!!!
