San Diego Comic-Con 2011 is Here!

This year I have five things premiering at San Diego Comic-Con, and at least two signing events. Here’s all the info on those bits of coolness, as well as some exciting news about me being chosen as a featured Twitterer by UberSocial!

SIGNINGS

Want to get your Serenity Travel posters signed? Or maybe one of the new Team Unicorn posters I have premiering at the Con? Here’s where and when I’ll be signing:

  • Thursday, 3 pm, California Browncoats Booth (#A7/A8): They’ll have lots of my previous stuff for sale at the booth, too.
  • Sunday, 11 am, Team Unicorn Booth (Offsite @ NerdHQ, 379 4th Ave.): Check out the premiere of my first two posters for Team Unicorn, and get them signed while you’re at it!

NEW ART PREMIERING THIS YEAR

NOTE: Some of the pieces haven’t been announced yet, so I’ll update the mystery images as soon as I’m given permission. Stay tuned!

Poster for THE NERD MACHINE

This was the surprise project for The Nerd Machine. They asked me to create a poster that Zachary Levi could give away during his signing, commemorating the very first NerdHQ at Comic-Con. It was a very last minute project, which was done in two and a half days!

TWITTER NEWS

I’ve been approached by the editors at UberSocial to be part of their Comic-Con coverage this year. If you use the UberSocial or Twidroyd mobile Twitter apps, you can subscribe to their UberGuide to Comic-Con, which has a bunch of topic “channels”, featuring twitter accounts hand-selected by their editors, to help you sort through the tsunami of tweets coming out of the con. I’ll be listed in the “Creative Folks” channel. I’ll also be featured in all the channels when I use the #giveaway hashtag to announce where/when you can find one of my Twitter nametag giveaways.

Follow me on Twitter!

Are you finding my site for the first time because of something you found at Comic-Con? Thanks for visiting! You can check out some of the other cool stuff I’ve done, such as the Serenity Travel Posters, the Battlestar Galactica Propaganda Posters, the Inevitable Betrayal T-shirt and more, by visiting my portfolio. Acoustic North

My good friend Marian Call asked me to create a poster for a music and spoken-word festival, featuring artists from Anchorage, AK. She wanted the piece to feel like an old travel poster, and wanted it to capture the breathtaking colors of an Anchorage sunset.

In addition to being an amazing singer and all around excellent person, Marian is also a graphic designer’s dream client. She knew exactly what she wanted, provided reference images, and gave prompt and useful feedback. I love all my clients, but Marian is a dream to work with!

Thrilling Adventure Hour Patriot Cigarettes Ad

Posted February 7th, 2011 in Featured, Posters by Adam

Here’s another piece I put together for The Thrilling Adventure Hour. It’s an ad for Patriot Brand Cigarettes (“They’re Good For Your Constitution!”), one of the show’s “sponsors”. I had so much fun designing the cigarette pack on this one! Continue Reading »

Thrilling Adventure Hour Poster

Posted January 25th, 2011 in Featured, Illustration, Posters by Adam

If you’re in the L.A. area and you haven’t had a chance to check out The Thrilling Adventure Hour, do yourself a favor and pick up tickets to their next show. It’s like a younger, more absurd version of A Prairie Home Companion — actors on stage reading lines in the style of an old-time radio broadcast. And along with the super-talented main cast (the Work Juice Players, who include people like Paul F. Tompkins, John DiMaggio, and the lovely Annie Savage), the monthly guest stars are like a who’s who of comedic actors. The first show I went to guest-starred Nathan Fillion and The Kids in the Hall’s Dave Foley, among others. I’ve also seen Michael Hogan, Chris Hardwick, Allison Brie, Colin Hanks and a ton of other very funny people at the shows, which are staged at a cozy little theatre called Largo at the Coronet. If you can’t make it to a show, check out their podcast, which they just launched at the beginning of the year.

I fell in love with this show the first time I went, and I’ve been back several times. A few days ago, it occurred to me that their old-timey theme would fit in perfectly with my retro art style, so I asked them on Twitter if I could design a poster for them. They replied with, “We would love if you made us a poster! Get in touch through the website.” Naturally, this made my day, and I set right to work coming up with something.

I was so inspired that I had an idea straight off the bat, which was to feature one of their main segments, “Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars”. The skit follows the adventures of a earthling law man and his martian companion, Croach the Tracker, who is grudgingly under onus to Sparks for saving his people.

I’m not sure what the folks at The Thrilling Adventure Hour will do with the poster, but it was fun getting to play in their world for a bit!

Bad Robot Poster (Comic-Con 2010 Exclusive)

Posted August 10th, 2010 in Featured, Illustration, Posters, San Diego Comic-Con by Adam

I created this poster for QMx and Bad Robot as an exclusive, limited-edition promotional giveaway at San Diego Comic-Con 2010. I painted the image digitally in Photoshop, then aged/distressed it to give the poster a worn look. The model itself was based on the collectible statue of the robot unveiled by QMx at the show.

This was a real treat to work on, but definitely made me anxious, as the Bad Robot mascot is such a well-known and beloved character. I wanted to do it justice and create an high-quality piece, but I didn’t want to lose that sense of whimsy that makes the robot so lovable. We had a pretty tight turnaround on this piece, but thankfully the studio seemed to think I nailed it, and signed off on the piece in time for Comic-Con.

Battlestar Galactica Propaganda Posters

Posted July 12th, 2010 in Featured, Illustration, Portfolio, Posters by Adam

For my second major project for QMx, I pitched them on the idea of creating vintage propaganda-style posters for Battlestar Galactica. It seemed a natural fit for a TV show that was essentially a war drama.

Serenity “Blue Sun” Travel Posters

Posted July 6th, 2010 in Featured, Illustration, Portfolio, Posters by Adam

In 2006, Quantum Mechanix commissioned me to create a series of travel posters for Joss Whedon’s film, Serenity. I designed these as WPA-style travel posters for the planets and locations from the movie. They were a huge success, and remain one of Quantum Mechanix’s top sellers.

The highest praise came from Whedon himself, when he posted on the Whedonesque blog, calling the posters “extremely cool” and “masterfully designed.”

Gender & Genre Poster

Posted June 21st, 2010 in Illustration, Portfolio, Posters, Print by Adam

This image was created for the California Browncoats fan group to use as a postcard and poster to promote their Gender and Genre discussion panel at Wondercon 2007 in San Francisco. My challenge was to create something that would stand out among the thousands of free hand-outs at the convention. Continue Reading »

Charity Poster: Can’t Stop The Serenity

I designed the poster and marketing graphics for the 2007 Can’t Stop The Serenity events, a series of worldwide charity screenings of Joss Whedon’s Serenity, to benefit Equality Now.
